KOCHI: A 12-year-old boy from Aluva, born with congenital heart problem, cerebral palsy and genetic syndrome, has recovered after an open-heart surgery at a private hospital.
His quality of life is better than what it was during pre-Covid times. Now, his family is considering to admit him to a special school with support from treating doctors of Aster Medcity.

Due to his health conditions, Aasim Mohammed had delayed development and brain defect leading to intellectual limitations. Initially, the family tried to treat their son’s congenital heart defect. However, within a year of the surgery there was excessive muscle growth in the area repaired leading to reduced blood flow from his heart to the lungs.
“We tried to treat our son but neither surgery nor treatment was helpful,” said his father Noushad Faizy, who works as an Imam.

As his condition worsened, the child was taken to Aster Medcity and the doctors there decided to conduct a surgery on him to correct the heart condition.
The child was assessed and found to be fit to undergo the open-heart surgery. On the day he was admitted to the hospital, they did a Covid test on him and he tested positive. The surgery was postponed and the child was kept in quarantine for two weeks at a specialized Covid isolation ward in the hospital. Once he recovered and tested negative, the surgery was performed.
“After the surgery, his condition has improved remarkably. Though he doesn’t talk much, with speech and occupational therapy, his condition would improve and soon can lead an independent life,” said Dr Sajan Koshy, senior consultant, paediatric surgery, Aster Medcity.
The boy was discharged last month and when he returned for review three weeks later, the doctors found that his condition had improved.
